Questions from a Wanting-To-Learn newb
So I'm pseudo-new to Guild Wars (Made an Ele around 2 years ago but quit at level 9 so =\) and now I'm back and playing. Made a Ranger, got to level 20 in Proph, had a lot of fun. I've also made a monk just for fun, got it to level 19 in Factions so far...
But through playing the monk, trying out AB, Arena, hell, even snowball fights..And most of all, reading through these forums the past week or two...I've come to admitting I know next to nothing. As much as I'd like to be able to say that playing through one campaign one time I've learned how to effectively make builds and play the game, I know it's impossible.
That being said, I have a few questions. Mostly directed to Rangers. Hope this section's ok for that <_< >_>. (Mind you, while I'm trying to learn PvP, if you want to give PvE advice go for it.)
Whirling Defence- I've read on multiple accounts that it's no good, yet on every single build I've ever made I've included it. I always thought the blocking 75% of attacks for a good 20 seconds was nice. I'm 90% sure you -need- it for trapping builds, but I could be wrong there too. Just wondering what made it so bad.
Natural Stride- Why is this skill on so many bars? Is a speed skill almost required for builds? If so, what reason is that? Just wondering what makes this skill as superb as I've heard.
QuickShot- Hard as I've tried, I can't find any real recent opinions on this skill. Personally, I've liked combining it with Needling Shot once they get under 50% but apparently that build's far outdated and considered terrible by the current metagame.
While I can agree most Elites are useful in their own situations, is there any Elite that's just sorta...has more situations? From what I've read Burning Arrow, Magebane shot, BHA, and Glass Arrows seem to be the most commonly used, although Magebane shot apparently needs a nerf. I originally made a ranger for Barrage, but now Volley seems like it's superior...Then I liked incendiary arrows a lot, was that a bad choice also? Poison Arrow is what I'm running currently, however.
Then, after playing a monk, it's seemed like I was too easy a target standing still. So I went to strafing whenever I could, and also trying to use wasd instead of arrows. While on my ranger, should I be constantly moving around while I attack or should I just pick a spot, plant it, and start letting arrows fly.
I guess that's all the questions I'll ask for now <_< >_>.
Any help at all is appreciated, for you people who just come into topics, take a look, say "Somebody else is bound to answer that" and just leave : P.
Ah hell, quick edit: Radiant or survivor runes, just in general? Or should I shell out the money for a set of both?
Also wanted to say don't feel like you have to answer all of these or even more than one. Any answer to any number of these would be great : )

it might come over as: You are really noob but thats not what i wanna say.
Just read the skills and bar over and over again. Like the Burning arrow ranger. People run that bar because with natural stride (for block/speed boost 50/50 of time), interups, degen, you can survive most things on your own.
Whirling can be up 1/4 of the time, natural stride 1/2 of the time (14 exp, 10 mark, 10 wildernes, 3 prot).
Moving is something wich is very important in GW. As monk you can evade arrows and kite trough others to keep away warriors etc. Moving as ranger is also very stragic. Movement for a Cripshot ranger (this is a bar where movement is very important) is one of those bars. You dont want your cripshot in the backline when you pressure the other team back to there base.
I understand many of these things doesnt say a thing to you. But if you play and play you will figure it out. Also read some Non-flame topics of good PVP/PVE players here on forums and you will learn more
See ya Skarkees

On the contrary, all of that made sense : P.
I guess I've never thought about the recharge rate compared to how long you can keep something up in the case of stances. Should I pretty much be in a stance 24/7?
Everything else made sense, I'll just need to practice, like with kiting and such.
The only thing that didn't make sense was your first line O_o
Thanks, though

Whirling defense has a terrible uptime/downtime ratio. Natty's is so much better. Not only because of the better uptime, but also because it's bar compression: you have self defense and a speed boost in one skill slot, meaning you have more slots do do cool stuff with.
On the needling/quick shot build, it's bad. I'm sure the big numbers are nice to look at, but if you test it at the master of damage (which I haven't) I'm quite sure it's DPS will be pretty low compared to some real options. Rangers aren't made for damage (outside of rangerspike) and they never will be. If you want to deal damage, get a warrior. They're the superior damage dealers of guild wars. A ranger excells (sp?) at interrupting and spreading conditions.
On elites, Burning Arrow and BHA are nice in RA, but pretty much everywhere else Crippling Shot is the best ranger elite in the game. Movement control is incredibly important in GW, and Cripshot is incredibly good at it. As a rule, always take apply poison, natural stride and distracting shot. You can take barbed arrows instead of apply if you take poison arrow. I'm not a huge fan of it, but some people like it.
On movement: As a caster, when you're not casting you should be moving. As a melee you should always be moving, unless you're attacking a target that's standing still as well in which case he's baed. As a ranger or paragon, you should be pre-kiting enemy warriors like you would do on a caster (meaning you run away from them before they reach you), but it's a lot less important because rangers and para's are less obvious targets for enemy melee, due to higher armor.
On runes, With expertise you shouldn't be tight on energy, so take survivors. You shouldn't save money, because in PvP you should use a PvP character, and you can get runes on them for free after you've unlocked them.
